Here's a short list of interesting shojo manga reads for older teens ages 16 and up.

Editor's Choice

From a quick two-volume romance like Fall in Love Like a Comic to the classic story of a girl falling for a handsome demon as in Her Majesty’s Dog, the following list is just a few of the many manga series available for older teens.

Absolute Boyfriend Volume 1

Riiko, a lonely teenager who just can’t seem to get a boyfriend, finds herself in a sticky situation when she accidentally purchases Night, an android. Night’s cute, caring, and—costs a million dollars! If Riiko can’t pay up before her trial period with Night is over, she’ll have to return him and lose the best boyfriend she’s ever had!

Absolute Boyfriend is a six-volume manga series about the bittersweet romance triangle between lonely Riiko, charming but robotic Night, and Riiko’s bespectacled neighbor, Soshi. Published by VIZ Media, created by Yuu Watase, contains sexual references, mild nudity, and mild violence.

Fall in Love Like a Comic Volume 1

Fall in Love Like a Comic is about high school student Rena who’s actually a shojo manga artist. Her romantic manga stories are good but she feels they would be even better if she had a boyfriend of her own for inspiration. Then when good-looking Tomoya agrees to help her, everything goes well until Rena’s feelings for him give her artist’s block. Does Tomoya really love her, or is he just pretending so that he can help her with her manga stories?

Fall in Love Like a Comic is a quick two-volume manga series. Since the story is short, the plot moves forward with the romance quickly and would appeal to someone looking for a quick read with many well-drawn kissing scenes. Published by VIZ Media, created by Chitose Yagami, contains sexual references and language.

Her Majesty’s Dog Volume 1

Amane isn’t very popular in her new school, the opposite of her supposed boyfriend, Hyoue. The other girls at school can’t believe that inept and dense Amane could attract the attention of Hyoue, but the truth is that Amane is a spiritualist from a remote village and Hyoue is her demon-dog guardian. It’s Hyoue’s job to help his “master” battle evil spirits, but is that all Amane will ever think of him, as her dog?

Her Majesty’s Dog is an interesting horror/fantasy/romance manga series with a bit of action and comedy. Although the relationship between Hyoue and Amane starts out a little slow in the first volume it picks up in the following volumes. Published by Go!Comi, created by Mick Takeuchi, contains violence, creepy elements, serious references and language.

Night of the Beasts Volume 1

At the sight of a mysterious murder, tough-girl Aria runs into a strange man named Sakura who manages to boldly kiss her! Although enraged with the man, she keeps running in to him. Then when a black demon appears, Aria realizes that there is more to Sakura—and herself—than meets the eye. Can she save Sakura from his demonic fate?

Night of the Beasts is a good read for shojo fans who like a bit more action in their manga. A six-volume series with romance, demon-fighting, and a tough female lead. Published by Go!Comi, created by Chika Shiomi, contains violence, tobacco use and language.

Other Older Teen Shojo Manga

Aside from these examples, there are many other shojo manga series available like Immortal Rain and Vampire Knight. For fans who prefer romantic stories with more action, there are even some good shonen manga such as InuYasha and Rurouni Kenshin that appeal to female readers because of their likable heroes and spunky heroines.
